The previous generation Nissan Qashqai was the UK's best-selling crossover – and makes for a thoroughly sensible used car.

The second-generation Nissan Qashqai maintained its position as the most popular family crossover in the UK.

However, while a good all-rounder, it wasn’t the class-leader in terms of talent.

Ignore the entry-level Visia model, because you’ll find better value further up the range. The N-Connecta version would be our choice, offering all the kit you’re likely to need (including a seven-inch touchscreen, sat-nav, DAB radio and 360-degree parking cameras).

A pair of 1.3-litre petrol engines were available (140hp and 150hp), along with a 115hp 1.5 diesel. If you want four-wheel drive, though, you need the more powerful 150hp 1.7 diesel.

Cabin space is good and includes plenty of storage options, but the 430-litre boot is too small for a car of this size – holding little more than hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf.

As a jack-of-all-trades, the Qashqai should be on your shortlist. That said, the Mazda CX-5 is better to drive, the Peugeot 3008 is nicer to look at and sit in, and the Seat Ateca feels more upmarket.
