The new Jaguar Type 00 concept has been revealed at a headline-grabbing event in Miami. And doesn’t it look incredible? A Jaguar E-type for a new era, it may admittedly be liked and loathed in equal measure. Me? I think it looks fabulous – and is a tantalising first look at Jaguar’s new electric four-door GT car that’s due to launch in late 2025.

Let me take you through it in detail.

  • Rakish and raffish

I saw the new Jaguar Type 00 concept several week ago, behind closed doors at the firm’s HQ in Gaydon, England. And the first thing I thought when the curtains were pulled back? Rolls-Royce Spectre. And a Jaguar right up there with a Rolls-Royce is no bad thing. Because those are the circles Jaguar wants now to be compared with.

I think this concept is there already.

  • Distinctive proportions

The proportions of the new Jaguar Type 00 concept are classic Jaguar; extra-long hood, long wheelbase and a sweeping roofline. The huge 23-inch wheels are likely to be replicated by the production version, too.

Incidentally, the name is pronounced ‘type zero zero’. And the bold colour? It’s called Miami Pink, to reflect the art deco surroundings of its reveal location.

  • Prototypes already in action

It’s also important to note that Jaguar is already testing prototypes of this car’s production-ready equivalents on the road in England – and, despite the disguise, you can still see how much of the concept is likely to reach showrooms. Bosses have admitted 80-85% of what we see here is likely to make production.

So, what are the highlights that caught my eye?

  • Modern surfaces

Modern and ultra-clean lines define the new Jaguar Type 00. It is precisely-finished, with the impact reinforced by flush surfaces. The front end has an intentionally bold and upright appearance, with high-tech LED lighting and the new Jaguar script appearing in the flush ‘grille’.

Note, there is now no longer a round Jaguar ‘growler’ badge.

  • No rear window

At the rear, Jaguar’s new ‘Strikethrough’ graphic dominates, contrasting with those bold rear haunches. Full-width LED lighting is hidden within. There’s also a glassless tailgate – like the Polestar 4, the Jaguar Type 00 concept has no rear window. The rear-view mirror displays live video from a camera instead.

  • Jaguar leaper

Jaguar traditionalists, rest easy. The new Jaguar Type 00 concept has retained the Jaguar ‘leaper’, located on a hand-finished brass ingot on each side of the car. Ingeniously, they whirr open when you turn the car on, to reveal rear-facing cameras.

  • Butterfly doors

Dramatic butterfly doors reveal an elegant and exuberant interior. As with the exterior, the drama has been turned up for the Jaguar Type 00 concept car, but the designers insist production cars will have a similar layout and features.

  • Brass lines

Three brass lines define the interior, including a central 10.5-foot

-long brass spine. The brass is hand-finished and production cars are expected to use a version of this eye-catching décor.

When switched off, no screens are visible…

  • Pop-up screens

… But when you turn the new Jaguar Type 00 concept on, they silently whirr up and appear. Similar ultra-wide screens are likely to appear in the production car – and it is noteworthy that the screens already have what appears to be production-ready content, including a speedometer, odometer and gearshift indicator.

  • Stone and textiles

There is no leather in the new Jaguar Type 00 concept, something that is also sure to rile traditionalists. Instead, it uses eco-friendly woven textiles, including a wool blend for the seats, sound bar and flooring.

The ‘floating’ seats are mounted on travertine stone, a feature that I can’t imagine making production…

  • Electric drive

As for what’s under that huge bonnet, the car is based on a dedicated new Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA. The firm is targeting a range of up to 430 miles, and ultra-rapid charging will add 200 miles of range in as little as 15 minutes.

  • ‘Unmistakable presence’

JLR chief creative officer Gerry McGovern said Type 00 is “a pure expression of Jaguar’s new creative philosophy. It has an unmistakable presence. This is the result of brave, unconstrained thinking, and unwavering determination.

“It is our first physical manifestation and the foundation stone for a new family of Jaguars that will look unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”

  • Exuberant Modernism

The Type 00 concept demonstrates Jaguar’s new creative philosophy, which is called ‘Exuberant Modernism’. The firm calls it “vibrant, uninhibited and fearless… future-facing, curious and inspired by the world”. It is also “respectful of the past, not dictated by it”.

As well as the new Jaguar script, or ‘device mark’, there are also two ‘maker’s marks’ – the Jaguar ‘leaper’ and this new monogram made up of the ‘j’ and ‘r’ letters.

  • Miami spice

After its private showcase, the new Jaguar Type 00 concept was revealed to the world at Miami Art Week. “Our presence in Miami Design District is the embodiment of everything that symbolises new Jaguar,” said MD Rawdon Glover. ‘Art, culture and creativity in all its forms is a passion for us and our clients.”

So there you have it – a brand new Jaguar concept car that’s our first look at the future of this famous brand.
